SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- One of the state's oldest nonprofit organizations to help the disabled is closing.
The Arc of Utah has faced trouble since last year following financial mismanagement and decreased donations. The organization dropped all nine of its staff members and had $75,000 in debt. It continued to operate only with the help of volunteers.
While the Arc is closing, a new nonprofit, the Utah Association for Intellectual Disabilities, is forming and will take on some of the Arc's responsibilities.
The new organization will continue a holiday program, computer donation program and social activities program.
The new association is applying for nonprofit status and is expected to be staffed by volunteers to start.
