(KSL News) A car launched over a freeway barrier on I-215 today, critically injuring the driver and creating a traffic mess.

The Utah Highway Patrol says around 2 p.m., the car had just merged onto eastbound I-215 at about State Street when it hit a barrier. The car flipped onto the other side of the freeway and slid across three lanes of traffic before slamming into the opposing wall.

At the same time, the car's engine broke free and rolled down the road while its transmission launched upward, into the 300 West overpass.

The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Four other cars were damaged, but no one else was seriously hurt.

The accident closed the freeway and created a nasty backup for several hours.
