This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Jordan River Galvanizing is a fascinating operation. I must confess I knew very little about the process of "galvanizing" and didn't realize the benefits of the process until I visited with Ron Atwood, company founder and owner.

Galvanizing is the process of coating iron or steel with zinc. To galvanize, products are immersed in molten zinc to produce a coating of zinc-iron alloy. The process has many benefits. Galvanizing enhances the structural integrity of carbon steel. It also makes it simpler to wash away dirt, oil and grease so the products look better and are easier to maintain. Galvanizing increases service life by providing up to 75 years of rust protection, and it makes parts scrape and scratch resistant.

I asked Ron about items that customers bring in for the process. He explained that Jordan River Galvanizing is equipped to do both tiny jobs and huge projects. He showed me a kettle that is the latest in galvanizing design. It's 30 feet long, seven feet deep and five feet wide. This gives the company the capability to galvanize products up to 55 feet in length by using a double-dip process.

At the other extreme, the company uses a 600 mm diameter centrifuge for small parts. This sets Jordan River Galvanizing apart from other companies as a small-parts specialist. I saw supplies including bolts, anchors, brackets, clips, washers and other small parts waiting for the galvanizing process. The scope of sizes the operation can accommodate is most impressive and the latest technology is well utilized.

It's obvious that Ron is proud of his company and employees. He started the business many years ago in humble circumstances. Today, the modern plant with the finest equipment provides employment to 40 hard-working people, and Jordan River Galvanizing has gained a well-deserved reputation for excellent quality, quick turnaround and great prices.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
