(Press Release)OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University men's basketball team (11-9) won by its largest margin of victory this season, 81-43, Thursday at the McKay Center against the Academy of Art University (3-21).
Senior guard Ryan Toolson had a game-high 26 points and six assists in only 28 minutes of play. Junior forward Tyray Petty had his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. Six of his rebounds were offensive. Senior guard Josh Olsen also had 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 30 minutes of play.
"The game played out the way I had hoped," UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker said. "Academy of Art was certainly competitive, short-handed, but they were physical. I thought they banged us around, but collectively I don't think we moved backwards with our play. There were some guys that I thought played well and continued to move their games forward."
The Wolverines led 43-23 at the half, marking the largest lead at the half the team has had all season. Toolson had 12 points and three assists at the break, and Petty and Olsen each had eight points at the half as well. Junior forward Jourdain Scoubes led the rebound category with seven boards, and finished the game with nine, a season-high. Utah Valley made 12 field goals in the half, seven of which were from behind the three-point line.
Utah Valley pulled away in the second half holding the Academy of Art to only 6-of-23 shooting in the period for a 26.1 field goal percentage. Toolson scored 14 points in the second half on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from down town.
Toolson is now only 12 points away from becoming the first Wolverine in Utah Valley men's basketball history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. His current season scoring average is 24.6 points per game.
Next up for the Wolverines will be another home game Monday at 7 p.m. against Lamar of the Southland Conference. UVU will then hit the road for the following three games before returning to Orem to host its last four games of the season.
