Firefighters found the body of a United States woman on Tuesday on Portugal's highest peak on the mid-Atlantic Azores island group, one day after she was reported missing, the Lusa news agency reported.
The body of Paula Clark, 42, was found around noon on Mount Pico on Pico Island, one of the archipelago's nine islands, some 400 metres (1,300 feet) from a shelter used by hikers, a local firefighter told the agency.
One of her legs was broken and she appeared to have died from hypothermia, he added.
Clark climbed the mountain on Friday. Firefighters believe she got lost as she descended the mountainn, which reaches an altitute of 2,351 metres above sea level. Local authorities said they had opened an investigation.
The Azores are located about 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) west of mainland Portugal.
