HIGHLAND, Utah (AP) -- It was just a joke, but a hit list written outside a school led to suspensions for three students.

The list of 16 students was written in chalk on a sidewalk outside Lone Peak High School, Principal Chip Koop said.

The message said "watch your back," Alpine School District spokeswoman Jerrilyn Mortensen said.

The incident occurred at the beginning of the school year. Some parents asked if they should keep their kids home for a day.

Three students were suspended for a day, Koop said.

"They weren't ... your rowdy kids, kids you have behavioral problems or challenges with," he said.

Koop said the list was "completely innocent but not a very well thought-through action."
