(Photo courtesy Episcopal Church) SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The bishop of the Utah Episcopal Church Utah says she will retire on Sept. 11, 2010.
The Rt. Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish has served as the faith's leader in Utah since 1996, overseeing 22 parishes and more than 6,000 members across Utah and one parish in northern Arizona.
The church says Irish is one of only 12 female bishops in the worldwide Anglican Communion, which Episcopal Church USA is a part of.
In a letter read to congregants Sunday, Irish says that she and husband Frederick Quinn will be spending time in Washington, D.C. to be closer to their families following her retirement.
Irish is well known in the community as chairwoman of the Board of Directors of O.C. Tanner Co, which was founded by her father. Irish has also won the Governor's Award for the Humanities for a lifetime devoted to scholarship, religion and philosophy.
