Salt Lake's first baby of 2009 was delivered just before 1:00 this morning at LDS Hospital. At 2 a.m. the second baby came, and at 3 a.m. the third baby of the new year was born; all were born at different hospitals.

It's a big perk to have one of the first babies of the year. But for the parents of the baby born at the University of Utah Medical Center early this morning, there's another perk.

Paul and Jenipher Sears can't decide what's better: having one of the first babies of the year or having little Michael Garrett so close to game day at the University of Utah Medical Center.

Paul Sears said, "We have a third Utes fan." Jenipher said the family loves football and everyone is a huge Utes fan. Michael Garrett was the third Salt Lake baby born this year. He was born at 3:02 this morning and weighed in at 7 pounds 3 ounces.

Jenipher recalls, "I only had to push for five minutes, and he just came right out." He has two older brothers, 5-year-old Ethan and 2-year-old Taylor.

The Sears family came to the hospital prepared and wearing red, and that's where they'll be watching the Utes play in the Sugar Bowl tomorrow. "I'm going to be tailgating in a rocking chair," Paul said.

Just after 2 this morning, in a hospital room at St. Mark's, Aiden Galvan showed up. It happened just hours after his mom, Natasha Galvan, drove herself to the hospital because dad was at work.

She said, "She kept checking me at 11. She said you watch, he's not going to come until after midnight and he probably would have come earlier but he was turned."

Aiden weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and stretched 19 inches. He has a brother and step-brother at home. Natasha said, "It's so weird. I didn't think he was going to come." Each of the hospitals presented big gift baskets to the New Year's babies.

We don't have any information on the first baby born this year because the parents did not wish to speak to the media.
