SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah State Board of Education will decide next month whether more guidance counselors will be required for Utah schools.
If the proposal is approved, school districts will need to provide one counselor for every 350 junior high and high school students.
Some districts currently have a ratio of about one counselor per 600 students.
The board is expected to take up the issue at its Jan. 8 meeting.
The proposal comes as school districts face tougher financial conditions. Superintendents raise concerns about how to pay for the additional counselors.
Steve Peterson, executive director of the Utah School Superintendents Association, says the proposal should be shelved for now so local districts can decide how to spend tax dollars.
