SALT LAKE CITY — For the first time in seven years, the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square released new music this week.
The album, titled "This New Day," is now available for purchase and streaming. "The sound of the recording, I think, is, if not our best, certainly our best that we have done," said Mack Wilberg, director of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
Wilberg has directed the choir for nearly 20 years after being called to serve in that position by President Thomas S. Monson in March of 2008. The choir originally recorded the 16 tracks about a year ago at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
The choir's director said the album is a unique sound for the choir, which is typically known for its loud music. "It's really music designed, I think, to help people ground themselves, take a breath, feel connected to the divine and to experience some peace in their lives," said Ryan Murphy, associate music director for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
The choir is working on another album of music right now set to be released next year.
