A Utah state lawmaker is going to try again to change a state law to allow unmarried couples to adopt children, but she acknowledges it will be difficult.
Salt Lake Democratic Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck put her name to a similar measure last year, and it never got out of the House Rules Committee.
The incoming Senate president acknowledges the bill likely won't ever make it to the Senate. That said, Chavez-Houck is trying again. She says the only thing that's different for unwed couples is their relationship. Right now, they can't adopt children, regardless of sexual orientation. Single people can.
The Division of Child and Family Services says a change could help it place more children. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the proposal still would give preference for adoption to married couples.
