MILAN — Utah native and Team USA speed skater Casey Dawson withdrew from the speed skating men's 10,000-meter event at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics Friday.
With his decision, the U.S. had no racer in the event. Czechia's Metodej Jilek won gold, with Poland's Vladimir Semirunniy and the Netherlands' Jorrit Bergsma claiming silver and bronze.
Dawson opened his second Olympics in the 5,000-meter on Sunday, Feb. 8. After a slow start, he came in after his pairing and finished eighth overall.
Reports say his focus will be on the team pursuit and 1,500-meter races.
The 1,500-meter quarterfinals will start at 12:15 p.m. MT on Saturday, Feb. 14. The semifinals and two final rounds will follow later in the afternoon.
The Team Pursuit event will open on Sunday, Feb. 15. The semifinal and final rounds take place on Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 6:30 to 8:47 a.m. MT.
Prior to the Olympics, Dawson and his team set a world record in the pursuit with a time of 3:32.49. The Olympic record was set at the Beijing Games in 2022 by Norway with a time of 3:36.62.
Dawson will race alongside Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran in the event starting on Sunday.
