Have You Seen This? Girl's first bike ride inspires joyous reaction

THE STREET — I have failed my kids in at least one major way: I never taught them how to ride a bike.

I had the best intentions — I got them a balance bike when they were young, but they never wanted to ride it. Then, I bought them bigger bikes when they got older. But I never put training wheels on those bigger bikes, so my kids were understandably reluctant to ride them.

Then my kids hit growth spurts and grew so big they needed adult bikes. When adult-sized kids with no previous riding experience get on adult-sized bikes, the results often aren't great.

My bad. I totally deprived them of the experience of riding around the cul-de-sac with training wheels and then proudly graduating to a bigger bike. And now they're going to become adults who pretend like it's OK that they don't know how to ride but secretly resent me.

Given my failures, this cute little video was like a dagger to my heart.

Now that's how it's done. This gal has the confidence and commitment to go through the learning process. And her reaction is priceless.

"Since getting a helmet and pads for Christmas, Dayton had been determined to learn how to ride her bike without training wheels, practicing alongside her dad while her twin sister had already learned," explains the girl's mom in the caption. "Despite several falls, she stayed positive and encouraged herself the entire time."

Well done, Dayton. You deserve to celebrate. And I hope that the rest of us can all experience moments in our lives that make us feel this proud and happy (but for my kids, these moments will all be non-bike-related).
