ST. GEORGE — Rivalry night in the south didn't go the way Utah Tech planned.

What was supposed to be a homecoming celebration ended in defeat as Southern Utah walked out of Greater Zion Stadium Saturday night with a 28-7 win.

From the jump, the Thunderbirds controlled the game.

The Southern Utah offense wasted no time getting down field before Joshua Dye punched in a 20-yard touchdown to put the Thunderbirds up early. A few possessions later, Jayden Rogers drilled a 35-yard field goal to make it 11-0 going into the second half.

Every time Utah Tech got close to finding the end zone, it fell apart on a missed read, a fumble, a defensive stop that gave Southern Utah control of the game.

Going into the third quarter, the visting team had completely taken over. Dye continued to dominate, breaking loose for another touchdown to stretch the lead to 18-0.

The biggest moment of the night came early in the fourth. Backed up near their own goal line, Southern Utah handed the ball to Dye, who ran a 92-yard touchdown that turned the game into a highlight reel.

Utah Tech finally found the end zone late in the fourth, but it didn't change much as the game was already in hand. Rogers capped the night with a short field goal, and the Thunderbirds coasted to a statement win for the axe, once again.

This game wasn't about luck or a few big plays, it was about control; Southern Utah dictated the game from start to finish.

Utah Tech falls to 1-7 on the season, while Southern Utah improves 3-5 looking to gain some momentum in the last stretch of games.
