SANDY — Fire officials have identified the man who was killed in a house fire that erupted in Sandy early Thursday.

Sandy firefighters arrived at 9070 S. Daybreak Drive about 4 a.m. to a house that was "heavily involved" with smoke and flames, Sandy Fire Deputy Chief Chris Aston said. Crews launched an interior attack to fight the blaze and were able to extinguish the fire.

Ronald Cottam, 75, lived in the home and was found dead inside, Aston said. Firefighters believe he was the only person home at the time of the fire.

Investigators were on scene Thursday working to determine what caused the fire, but Aston said it appears the fire started in a rear bedroom of the home.

The roof collapsed due to the fire damage, and the house is considered a total loss.

Correction: In an earlier version, the fire department reported the fire was at 9078 S. Daybreak Drive instead of 9070 S. Daybreak Drive
