- Utah opened its 52nd operating state liquor store in Marriott-Slaterville on Wednesday.
- New stores in Roy and Moab, replacing older locales, are nearing completion.
- To meet growing demand, the Park City and St. George areas are to get new stores, which would be the 53rd and 54th locales in Utah.
MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE, Weber County — Utah and Marriott-Slaterville leaders gathered Wednesday to formally open a new state liquor store, the 52nd locale now operating in Utah.
New larger stores that will replace existing locales in Roy and Moab are nearing completion, the officials said, while new outlets are planned in the Park City and St. George areas.
"Population growth and demand," said Utah Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, alluding to the factors behind construction of the new Marriott-Slaterville store and the other planned locales. The stores in the Park City and St. George areas, still in the planning stages, would become the 53rd and 54th state liquor stores in Utah.
Stevenson, one of the lead Utah lawmakers on formulating alcohol policy, took part in Wednesday's ceremony along with Steven Handy, chairman of the Alcoholic Beverage Services Commission, which helps govern the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services. The new store in Marriott-Slaterville, located west of Ogden in Weber County at 1115 W. 12th Street, has "a great look and feel, and those who come in and out of here are going to be well-served," Handy said.
Utah's liquor stores, all state owned, generated $578.9 million in sales in 2024, and Ericka Evans, executive director of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, anticipates $9.8 million in sales at the new Marriott-Slaterville store through next June. Nearly $4 million of that $9.8 million will go to state and local communities, "helping to keep taxes low for all Utahns by funding services such as roads and transportation, public safety, education and health," the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services said in a statement.
As for the other stores under construction, the Roy replacement store, 3686 W. 5600 South, is nearing completion and expected to open in December. The Moab replacement store, 963 Main Street, is expected to open sometime in early 2026. Both new locations will be more than 12,000-square-feet, larger than the existing stores, aiming "to meet the demand of the area," said Tom Gibbs, project and portfolio manager for the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services.
The planned stores in the Park City and St. George market areas "are very early in the process and do not yet have expected opening dates," said Michelle Schmitt, spokeswoman for the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services. The new store in the St. George area will actually be built in the nearby city of Washington.
Construction of the new Marriott-Slaterville store, the fifth in Weber County, started late last year. It had a price tag of around $9 million.
