PARK CITY — A Summit County man was charged Wednesday with breaking into a warehouse belonging to Park City Mountain Resort and causing damage by firing off several rounds.
Police say this happened after he left his burning RV.
William Dougherty, 39, is charged in Summit County's 3rd District Court with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; three counts of causing property damage or destruction, two second-degree felonies and a class A misdemeanor; reckless burning, a class A misdemeanor; and theft, a class B misdemeanor.
The series of events began Sept. 6 when a woman "heard an explosion" and looked outside her Park City home to see Dougherty's RV on fire.
"She then saw him getting into his truck and driving away. Neighbors, along with first responders, finally put out the fire," according to charging documents.
Later that same day, an employee at a warehouse near Park Avenue and Kearns Boulevard found "the entryway to the warehouse where he worked was severely damaged and the entry door open," the charges state.
The employee reviewed surveillance video and watched Dougherty shoot his way into the warehouse, which belonged to Park City Mountain Resort, prosecutors noted in the charges.
"The warehouse was not occupied at the time. Also on the video, (the employee) saw (Dougherty) discharge several more rounds inside the warehouse, damaging the interior and ceiling," the charges state.
Dougherty then took a bottle of bourbon from a refrigerator and left, according to police.
The employee later discovered that his truck, which was parked in front of the warehouse, "had been struck by several bullets." A bicycle inside the warehouse was also struck. Damage to the warehouse was estimated by Vail Resorts to be more than $5,000, the charges state.
Park City police located Dougherty at Deer Valley Resort and arrested him. When officers searched his vehicle, they "found a loaded AR-15 style rifle with ammunition consistent with that found at the warehouse," according to the charging documents.
