BYU moves into AP Top 25 after win, while Utah drops out with blowout loss

SALT LAKE CITY — In a ranked matchup against Texas Tech, Utah's defense held firm for as long as they could.

After getting little done for much of the game, the offense managed late to score a touchdown to make it a 3-point game with 10 minutes left to play. But eventually, it was too much to handle and the Texas Tech offense quickly put up multiple scores to secure a 24-point win.

In short, the Utah offense took a hit to the hopes that it had turned a corner from a lackluster showing last season, and now there's more questions than answers for the team.

But the loss dropped the Utes in the national rankings, with a fall from No. 16 to outside unofficially at No. 29 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll that was released Sunday afternoon.

Conversely, BYU came off the bye week and secured a win over East Carolina, giving a shot in the arm to freshman Bear Bachmeier, who got into a rhythm in the second half to help the Cougars pull away.

The Cougars have spent the entirety of the season just outside of the AP Top 25, but the win Saturday was enough to convince voters to include BYU in the rankings. BYU entered the top 25 for the first time this season at No. 25, up one spot from an unofficial ranking at No. 26.

It's the fourth time in five years the Cougars have been ranked at some point in the season.

Texas Tech, which secured a 34-10 win over Utah, moved up to No. 12 to take the top spot in the Big 12 that has four teams ranked this week. Iowa State is at No. 14, while TCU joined the rankings for the first time this season at No. 24.

Utah, Arizona State and UCF are all receiving votes.

At the top of the rankings, Ohio State checks in at No. 1 for another week on an off week with 52 first-place votes. Miami, which was previously ranked No. 4, jumped up to No. 2 this week with a win over Florida, securing seven first-place votes. Behind the Hurricanes is Penn State, LSU and Georgia.
