KANAB — James Willis Cox, a 57-year-old Leeds resident and registered sex offender, appeared for sentencing last month on first-degree felony object rape during a hearing held at 6th District Court in Kanab.

Cox originally faced a second charge, third-degree felony kidnapping, which was dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea.

The case was filed following an investigation by the Kane County Sheriff's Office into a report alleging the sexual abuse of a child that reportedly took place in 2007.

During a forensic interview, a woman told detectives the abuse took place when she was a teenager and Cox was working at her family's business. She said she was able to break free and hid in a locked restroom until family members returned.
