LONG VALLEY JUNCTION, Kane County — Family members identified the Roy man who died in a crash after a semitruck left the roadway near the Kane and Garfield County border.
Doug Byram was driving a semitruck pulling a trailer heading south on U.S. 89 just north of Long Valley Junction and into Garfield County when the semi veered off the roadway to the right for an unknown reason, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said. Initially, police reported the crash occurred on the Kane County side of the border.
"The vehicle traveled through rough terrain and was stopped abruptly by an embankment," he said.
The trailer overtook the front of the truck, dislodging the cab body from the chassis. The cab continued to roll, striking an unattended vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the road, Roden said.
Byram died from his injuries. An online fundraiser* set up for his family said he had just been heading out for the week when the accident took place.
"Doug was one of the kindest men you could ever meet. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and would talk their ear off. He had the best sense of humor. Doug was always laughing and joking. You rarely saw him upset," the fundraiser states.
The Byrams were in the process of getting life insurance for Doug Byram, but it hadn't been set up yet. His wife Robin is now left with the funeral expenses as a stay-at-home mother to two children, according to the fundraiser.
The owner of the unattended vehicle was in a nearby field when the crash occurred and responded to the scene.
