TREMONTON — One week after two Tremonton police officers were shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call, two Box Elder High School students held a lemonade stand to raise money for the officers' families.

Kaden Kimber, 17, and Carson Kimber, 15, spent the last few days of summer preparing for the fundraiser to help Sgt. Lee Sorensen and officer Eric Estrada's families.

Their mother, Sherrie Kimber, said the boys handled the fundraiser on their own.

"I worked the night shift, came home, and first thing Kaden said was, 'Mom, we are doing a lemonade stand, we're going to help these guys,'" Sherrie said.

The deadly incident hit the Kimber family hard. Her father is a retired member of law enforcement.

"You are family for life forever," Sherrie Kimber said. "Your heart hurts because you know the sacrifice. You know how scary it is. You know how tough that job is."

Her sons have hosted lemonade stands before, all to benefit loved ones of officers killed in the line of duty.

"Knowing that we have to do another one of these, there are no words," she said. "It's hard because it shouldn't have happened. So, a little bit of anger mixed with all this sadness and soberness, but trying to figure out a better way to deal with it."

Though the boys didn't know the officers personally, they said they had friends who were connected to them in some way.

"We had our football coach talk to us separately about it to see if anyone was, like, going through things," Carson said. "Everyone knew about it and everyone was mourning it."

Sherrie Kimber said she's always taught her sons to look for the helpers.

"They don't get to sit back and watch bad things happen and think they're helpless," she said. "I never want them to feel helpless. They can always help."

On Saturday, she said her sons filled cups and collected donations all day.

"Their dad and I sit down with them, they write down their list of what they need, how they're going to do it, we give them the funds," she said. "They set it all up."

The Kimbers said they raised $1,457.

They're also accepting donations to Kimber's Venmo, @lovethesher, through Monday night.

Kimber said they'll coordinate with the Tremonton-Garland Police Department to deliver the funds, split equally, to both officers' families.

"I hope it helps other people to do the same thing and help them see that anyone could do this," Carson said.

Online fundraisers* for Estrada and Sorensen have been created to help the families as they move forward through the tragedy.

Box Elder School District announced there will be no school held on Thursday and Friday when the two officers' funerals will be held at the Utah State University Spectrum.

"We recognize that the amount of missing students and staff on these days would significantly decrease the quality of education. More importantly, we believe this time should be set aside for our community to come together in support of one another," a statement from the school district said.
