JENSEN, Uintah County — A Vernal man has died after colliding with a backhoe on the highway between Vernal and Jensen on Saturday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Troopers say a John Deere backhoe and an escort pickup truck were traveling east on U.S. 40 at about 5:35 p.m. on Saturday and attempted to turn left. A gray Toyota Camry was also traveling east and attempted to pass the vehicles "in a no-passing zone," according to troopers, and collided with the bucket of the backhoe, which then overturned.

The driver of the Camry, Cody Mitchell Chupp, 37, of Vernal, was taken to a local hospital and then transported to Salt Lake City via medical helicopter, where he later died. The backhoe driver suffered minor injuries.

More information about the crash was not immediately available.
