ST. GEORGE — A fight outside a Panda Express restaurant between two men who were picking up food resulted in one man being shot and the other arrested Sunday.
St. George police responded just after 2 p.m. to a report of a shooting in a parking lot near 1100 N. Bluff Street. Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old man with "a single gunshot wound to the abdomen/rib cage area and was bleeding," according to a police booking affidavit. "The bullet had entered under the right rib cage and traveled up the chest."
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. Before being loaded into an ambulance, he was able to identify Jesus Rafael Salcido Felix, 19, as the gunman, the affidavit alleges.
Police contacted Salcido's girlfriend and arranged to have him surrender at an apartment complex.
"Through a series of interviews … detectives learned that (Salcido), along with his girlfriend and baby, went to Panda Express to get lunch. As they were leaving, they saw (the victim) and his girlfriend entering the restaurant. (The victim) was there for a DoorDash order," according to the affidavit.
The two men confronted each other in the parking lot and began to fight.
"At one point, (Salcido) lifted his shirt to reveal a gun tucked in his waistband. The altercation continued and (Salcido) pulled out the gun, firing a single shot that struck (the victim) on the right side, just below the rib cage," the affidavit states.
After running from the scene, Salcido allegedly had his girlfriend call the police and report the incident. He was arrested and charged Monday in 5th District Court with firing a gun and causing serious injury, a first-degree felony; and aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, a second-degree felony.
The relationship between Salcido and the victim remains under investigation.
