KAYSVILLE — Friday night at Davis High had all the makings of a classic rivalry, and Fremont and Davis delivered one of the most thrilling games of the young season.
In front of a packed stadium with not an empty seat on either side, Fremont rallied from a 21-0 deficit to knock off Davis 35-34 in overtime, winning their second straight in the rivalry series.
Both teams entered the top-10 showdown undefeated after convincing Week 1 wins — Davis dominating Brighton 56-21, and Fremont rolling Weber 42-10 — to set the stage for a high-scoring battle. The question was whether either defense could step up and make a play.
Davis looked like the answer early. All-state safety Bode Sparrow set the tone with an interception on Fremont's opening drive, and by the end of the first quarter, quarterback Tradon Bessinger had connected with Tyson Baggett and others to help the Darts build a commanding 21-0 lead.
Sparrow added a second interception late in the half, while linebacker Isaac Morrison grabbed another to send Davis into halftime up 21-8.
But Fremont, led by standout junior linebacker Jak Masters and Tennessee commit wide receiver Salesi Moa, refused to fold. Slade Parker also hauled in multiple big catches, including a highlight-reel grab in the second half that brought the Silverwolves back within striking distance.
Masters made his mark on defense with a forced fumble and sack, keeping Fremont in the game as momentum began to swing.
By the fourth quarter, the rivalry fire was burning. Moa took over in crunch time, scoring back-to-back touchdowns in the final minutes to erase Davis' lead. After an onside kick recovery and another big grab from Parker, Fremont tied the game at 28-28 with less than a minute remaining. Kicker Cam Graves delivered under pressure to send the game into overtime.
In extra time, Baggett struck first for Davis with a touchdown grab, but a bad snap on the PAT left the Darts clinging to a 34-28 lead. Fremont answered quickly with Cade Hadley punching in a score on the ground, setting up Graves, once again.
With the season's wildest game on the line, Graves drilled the kick to lift the Silverwolves to a stunning 35-34 victory.
For Fremont (2-0), the win not only keeps their perfect start alive but also marks back-to-back rivalry triumphs over Davis, a feat that will sting for the Darts after holding such a commanding early lead.
Next up, Davis (1-1) will host Mountain Ridge on Thursday, while Fremont now (2-0) faces a major test against powerhouse Corner Canyon the same night.
