THE FRONT YARD — I had the strangest experience earlier this year. The weather was warming, the birds were chirping and it was time to turn on my sprinklers. This is always a nerve-wracking experience for me. Even though I winterize my system, it seems like there is usually a broken sprinkler head or some other issue to deal with.

My theory is that the crew who installed my sprinkler system didn't make it deep enough. But it could definitely be user error. I'm not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to yard maintenance.

Anyhow, I turned on each station to make sure everything was running smoothly. To my surprise, there were no visible leaks or issues. Seemed like 2025 was going to be my best year ever for sprinkler success.

Then I noticed the bubble. Eight feet across and about a foot high, it was silently forming in my front yard. When I tapped the bubble with my foot, it sloshed around like a waterbed. I'd never seen anything like this in my entire life.

Turned out, I had a cracked pipe. After popping the bubble and fixing the pipe, things have gone much better in my yard.

Given this recent experience, it cracked me up to see this little video.

Lawn bubbles are real, people. And they can strike when you least expect it. So keep your head on a swivel. Because you never know when your grass will begin to rise up like an angry water balloon, ready to explode.
