KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Utah Highway Patrol arrested two drivers exceeding 100 mph on I-15 Saturday in Utah County.
  • A Lindon man was caught driving 123 mph, troopers said.
  • Another driver from Manti was allegedly racing at 114 mph, according to UHP.

LEHI — Utah Highway Patrol troopers were busy on I-15 in Utah County Saturday night.

Two people were arrested in separate incidents, both for traveling over 100 mph, within a half-hour of each other in almost the same location.

Just before 10 p.m., a man on a bullet bike was recorded by a trooper going 81 mph near Lehi. As the trooper caught up with the motorcycle rider, another vehicle came up from behind going 123 mph, according to a police booking affidavit.

"I had my lights activated when I observed the vehicle turn off its lights and move to the HOV lane. The vehicle then made several lane changes to the right and exited (the freeway)," the affidavit says.

The motorcyclist then fled as the trooper followed the car, which he caught up with at the bottom of the off-ramp.

"The driver explained that he was being 'stupid' with the bike," the affidavit states. "I asked the driver what happened, and he explained that he saw the bike approach and decided that he was going to 'hang with the rider.' I asked if he was trying to evade me, and he explained that he 'did not know.'"

The 24-year-old Lindon man was arrested for investigation of exhibition driving, reckless driving and failing to display his headlights.

Just 25 minutes later, less than 10 miles from where the first trooper spotted the speeding car, another trooper spotted a Volkswagen Golf and a Honda Civic traveling side-by-side at about 70 mph.

"At the same time both vehicles quickly increased their speeds and raced down the freeway. The Volkswagen won the race and reached a speed of 114 mph. The Civic lost and only reached a speed of around 105 mph," a second affidavit states.

The trooper went after the winning Volkswagen and called in the license plate number of the Honda. He was able to catch up with the Volkswagen and pull it over.

The 26-year-old driver from Manti was asked why he was racing. He allegedly told the trooper "he knew it was stupid."

The man was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of reckless driving, exhibition driving and going more than 100 mph.
