WEST JORDAN — Two adults and two children have died from a fire that destroyed a house in West Jordan Friday.

West Jordan Police Sgt. Andrew Hercules said the initial call reporting the fire at 6340 W. 8270 South came in about 10:15 a.m. Emergency responders found a man, woman and juvenile boy dead inside the home, and a juvenile girl in critical condition was found outside the home.

In an announcement Saturday, police said the young girl succumbed to her injuries.

"We found this to be an isolated event. We believe this was an arson that was committed by one of the deceased individuals," police said in a statement Saturday.

The Office of the Medical Examiner is working to identify the individuals, but police said they believe they are all part of the same family.

Neighbor Robert Harlow recalled seeing black smoke across the street.

"It was bad. Once I turned the corner and didn't see any fire trucks there, I knew it was go time, and the adrenaline kicked in from that point," he said.

A neighbor pulled a little girl out of the house who had been stuck and couldn't get out because her eyes were burned closed, Harlow said. He described the burn as the worst he's ever seen.

He found a dog trapped behind a child gate in the stairs and carried it to safety.

"All I could hear was the roar of the fire," he said.

Harlow and other neighbors who helped were treated for smoke inhalation.

"You can't help but to think you could've done more. That's probably the hardest part right now," he said.

Harlow said two families lived at the home. A couple who lives upstairs that were both at work and a family who lives in the basement area, according to the neighbor.
