MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A runaway pet zebra flew through the sky on its way home after spending a week on the loose and becoming an internet sensation along the way.

"Ed the Zebra" arrived at his home in central Tennessee on May 30, and the next day, he was reported missing. Crews searched for eight days and finally captured him safely in a pasture near a subdivision on Sunday.

Video posted by the sheriff's office shows Ed wrapped in a net with his head sticking out as a helicopter carried him to a waiting animal trailer.

During his days of freedom, Ed was seen running along Interstate 24 and trotting through a neighborhood.

He quickly gained celebrity status as the subject of internet memes. One fake posting showed Ed dining at a Waffle House. Others had him visiting other Tennessee cities or panhandling on the side of the road.

The animal's owner told The Tennessean that Ed — who they had originally named Zeke — was meant to be an addition to their family farm.
