SALT LAKE CITY — A 31-year-old man allegedly working with a drug cartel was arrested Monday after police reported finding more than 10,000 fentanyl pills in his car.
Edwin Hernan Cruz Macias was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted fentanyl trafficking.
The FBI, along with the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force, have been conducting an investigation into a drug trafficking organization from Mexico. Macias was identified as a local distributor during the investigation, according to a police booking affidavit.
On Monday, agents pulled him over as he was driving.
"Agents then conducted a vehicle search and located approximately 10,000 fentanyl pills … under the passenger seat in a black bag," the affidavit alleges. "Edwin also admitted to an additional quantity of heroin and fentanyl pills at his residence."
Investigators searched his residence and found "a distributable amount of heroin and fentanyl pills," police said. "Edwin was found to be in possession of over 10,000 fentanyl pills. Edwin advised that he was a Mexican national and illegally present in the United States."
