MIDVALE — One person was arrested for investigation of arson after a large utility box was set on fire outside of a Midvale school early Monday.

Unified Fire Authority crews responded to Midvalley Elementary School, 217 E. 7800 South, just after 2:30 a.m. Investigators said they obtained video footage that showed an older man with a gray beard driving a newer model Hyundai Santa Fe that may have had an out-of-state license plate.

Just after 3:30 p.m., fire officials announced that a suspect had been taken in custody. Investigators believe a man used "accelerants" to start the fire, said Unified fire spokesman Benjamin Porter. A gas can was also found at the scene.

The school held remote classes Monday while a utility company worked to restore power. The school said the damage was extensive, and the building was without heat. It further offered resources to students who needed lunch at Union Middle School.

Crews repaired the utility box that was damaged and school will return to its regular in-person schedule Tuesday, according to the school's principal.
