VERNAL, Uintah County — A car crashed into an embankment Tuesday about five miles southwest of Vernal, killing one occupant and seriously injuring another, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

A silver Honda car traveling west on U.S. 40 drifted over the center line and across two lanes of oncoming traffic before crashing into a metal barrier and rolling down an embankment, according to UHP Cpl. Luis Silva.

There is no information on who was driving the vehicle, but both occupants were ejected. A 19-year-old man died at the scene, Silva said, and an 18-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

According to Silva, witnesses said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash. U.S. 40 remains open with lane diversions going around the location of the accident.
