Australia field hockey player has part of a finger amputated to compete at the Paris Olympics

COLOMBES, France — Australia field hockey player Matthew Dawson was so determined to compete in the Paris Olympics that he had part of the ring finger on his right hand amputated. Dawson severely injured the finger in practice two weeks ago. Surgery would have required months of recovery time. Dawson says he considers himself fortunate that it was just part of the finger. Australia plays its first game Saturday.
