SPRINGDALE, Washington County – A 19-year-old died in a motorcycle crash that happened in a tunnel in Zion National Park.

A 19-year-old was involved in a "single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle" in the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel on Thursday evening, according to a statement from park officials Friday. They did not say what led to the crash.

National Park staff members and Hurricane Valley emergency officials responded to the tunnel and started performing CPR on the man, but he died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

The Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel was closed for a time as officials responded to the scene. The National Park Service, Utah Highway Patrol and the state medical examiner are investigating the incident.

"All of us at Zion National Park extend our sympathy to the deceased's family for their tragic loss," said Bry Carter, acting superintendent of Zion National Park.
