BERKELEY, Calif. — Leon Marchand has been determined since his sixth-place finish in the 400-meter individual medley at the Tokyo Olympics to leave his mark on the Paris Games at home in France. With family, friends and an entire nation watching, the individual medley specialist is poised to be one of the faces of the Paris Olympics. Hardly the imposing physical specimen of Michael Phelps or 6-foot-5 Australian star Ian Thorpe, the 170-pound Marchand moved across the world to work with Phelps' longtime coach, Bob Bowman, at Arizona State. They recently won the program's first NCAA title.
