SALT LAKE CITY — A man was shot and killed by police early Tuesday after officers said he had a weapon and refused to comply with their orders.
Tuesday afternoon, police identified the deceased man as 35-year-old Cameron Ammon Cloward.
The shooting happened outside Charlie's Market, 875 S. State, just before 2:30 a.m. Salt Lake police received a 911 call from someone at the convenience store reporting there was a man with a weapon. Police have not said what type of weapon the man carried, and they have only described it as a "deadly weapon."
Officers arrived and found the man in the parking lot.
"The suspect had a weapon, challenged officers, and refused to comply with their orders," police said. "Four Salt Lake City police officers fired shots."
Cloward was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We prioritize the preservation of life and safety for our community members, and we want to make sure that our officers and community members are safe," said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg.
"The public may never fully realize or understand the volatile, dangerous and often unpredictable situations our officers face," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown in a statement. "This investigation will gather additional facts, but I am relieved there were no other physical injuries to our officers or other community members. The safety of our city remains our No. 1 priority."
The four officers who fired shots were placed on standard paid administrative leave. The officer-involved critical incident investigation will be led by West Jordan police.
Cloward was most recently convicted in September of assault on police officer, a class A misdemeanor, and sentenced to two years of probation. But he violated the conditions of his parole several times, according to court records, and was in and out of the Salt Lake County Jail. A warrant issued for his arrest on Feb. 14 was still outstanding at the time of his arrest.
