BARCELONA, Spain — Brazilian soccer star Dani Alves has gone on trial a year after he was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman at a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. The 40-year-old Alves denies any wrongdoing. The trial is scheduled to run through Wednesday at a Barcelona courthouse. State prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence for Alves if convicted while the lawyers representing his accuser want 12 years. Alves has been in pre-trial custody since January 2023. His requests for bail were denied because the court considers him a flight risk.
