LEHI — A semitruck driver avoided serious injury after plowing into the back of a dump truck Tuesday morning, police said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on Redwood Road near 2000 North shortly after 8 a.m. Lehi Police Sgt. Tyler Prawitt said the driver of a dump truck in the southbound lane was turning onto a job site when the semitruck driver traveling in the same direction "negotiated the speed incorrectly" and crashed into the back of the dump truck.
The crash was captured by a rear camera mounted on the vehicle of a driver traveling in the opposite direction, which Jesse Nuttall sent to KSL through the iWitness app. The video shows the dump truck slowing down to make a right turn onto a dirt road before the semitruck crashes into the back of it. The truck continues to move forward for at least 10 seconds after the collision as pieces of both vehicles fly into the air.
Prawitt said the semitruck driver received "moderate" injuries in the crash, while the dump truck driver was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation, but Prawitt added that the crash is a reminder that drivers should pay attention to what's happening on the roadway in front of them and respect commercial vehicles.
Both directions of Redwood Road were closed in the area for about three hours as crews worked to collect all the damage scattered across the roadway. The road has since reopened.
