PAYSON — A Payson man was arrested and accused of using a hatchet to kill one man in his home and then seriously injure another.

Jordan Poole, 26, was booked into the Utah County Jail on Saturday for investigation of aggravated murder and attempted murder.

Just before midnight on Friday, Payson police were called to a home near 500 South and 600 East on a domestic violence situation. When they arrived, Poole's mother opened the door and Poole was found sitting in the front room facing a wall, a police booking affidavit states.

"Officers stated Jordan was shaking and his right hand was covered in blood. Jordan also had blood splattered on his face," the affidavit states.

Police checked the rest of the home and reported finding Marcus Norman, age unknown, deceased in the basement with multiple cuts to his head, and Poole's brother injured with multiple cuts to his shoulder and head. A hatchet was also recovered.

When questioned by police, "Jordan admitted to seeing a flash of light, then voices told him he needed to take care of 'them.' Jordan stated he knew what he needed to do so he grabbed a hatchet and started swinging. Jordan stated he hit Marcus multiple times in the head with the hatchet because he kept getting up and was afraid Marcus was going to attack him," according to the affidavit.

Poole then struck his brother with the hatchet multiple times, police said. The brother was treated at a local hospital and was later released.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's family who lost their loved one and all those affected," police said in a statement.

Correction: An earlier version incorrectly stated police were called to an area of 500 North and 600 East instead of 500 South.
