HUNTINGTON — Investigators on Friday released a preliminary report on a fatal small plane crash that killed a pilot near Huntington on Oct. 27.

A relative of the man who died told investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board that the pilot had flown from his base airport in Craig, Colorado, to Vernal, before departing for a planned trip to Cedar City.

The man was piloting a Cessna T206H and left Vernal about 1 p.m. on Oct. 27, traveling southwest, then climbed to about 8,800 feet and maintained a "constant southernly heading" before the data ended at 1:45 p.m, the report said. The last data point recorded on the flight was near where the wreckage was later found, near the peak of a hill, according to the report.

"Investigators were unable to access the wreckage on site due to the steep terrain," the report said. "The airplane was recovered and retained for a future examination."

The report is based on preliminary information and the details are subject to change.
