GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy — The first Ryder Cup to be held in Italy has already become something of an ordeal for the United States. They trail 6 1/2-1 1/2 to a European team that has tied its best start to a Ryder Cup and is intent on wresting back the 17-inch gold trophy. The Americans have not won on European soil in 30 years. This was supposed to be their best chance to end that drought because they were coming off a 19-9 mauling of Europe in 2021 at Whistling Straits. The Europeans have other ideas. The Ryder Cup started as a friendly exhibition nearly 100 years ago and has become the biggest spectacle in golf.
