KAYSVILLE — High school football at its best was on display Friday night at Davis High in a 35-34 win for the Darts over West Jordan.
"That's an incredible game," Davis head coach Scott Peery said. "It was sloppy, we made a lot of mistakes, we gave it away, and we're just fortunate to come out at the end."
The Darts seemed to have the game in hand after a 24-point first quarter shutout, but the West Jordan Jaguars had a run of their own in them.
A 31-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Roybal to Jaxson Harris got the Jaguars on the scoreboard early in the second quarter. The Davis defense was able to stop West Jordan on the goal line the next time down, but the Jaguars' defense stepped up, as well, with an interception early in the second half to get the ball back.
Giovonni Polanco ran it in from 14 yards out to bring the Jaguars within 10 points, and then a recovered onside kick allowed West Jordan to score again just 42 seconds later on a run from Tevita Makaafi, capping off 21 unanswered points for the visiting team.
The Jaguars held the Darts to a field goal on the next drive and took a 28-27 lead with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter on a pass from Roybal to Kyle Curtis. West Jordan somehow came up with another onside kick following the go-ahead score, but Davis responded with an interception to neutralize the recovery.
An extended drive and wide-open touchdown pass from Tradon Bessinger to Logan Sundloff put the Darts back in the driver's seat, and a successful 2-point conversion made it 35-28 with a minute left in the game.

West Jordan's Dominic Overby had an impressive catch and run to get the Jaguars back in the end zone with 31 seconds left in the game, but the Davis defense had the final word on the night with a pass breakup on the extra-point attempt to come out with a 1-point victory.
"They kept us in it," Peery said of his defense. "The fact that our guys hung in there and had a poor second, third and fourth quarter and pulled it off says a lot about them. We'll take the win anyway how, and I'm excited to get a W tonight."
Both teams hit the road next week sitting at 1-1 on the season. Davis takes on Clearfield and West Jordan heads to Mountain Ridge.
