LAYTON — A Midvale man has been charged with 18 counts related to a string of burglaries in Layton, Kaysville and Davis County on Feb. 12-13.
Joshua James Carter, 46, was booked into the Davis County Jail with no option for bail Wednesday after Layton police used a Google account location warrant to tie Carter to the scene of multiple burglaries reported earlier this year.
Carter was charged with one count of second-degree felony burglary of a dwelling and 11 counts of class A misdemeanor burglary of a vehicle. He was also charged with six counts of theft, enhanced to third-degree felonies because of Carter's criminal history. According to Utah court records, Carter has been convicted of multiple felony and misdemeanor charges since 1995, including theft, burglary and possession or use of a controlled substance.
Layton victims in the February burglaries included the owner of a Ford F-150 and 2018 Ford Focus that were both unlawfully entered and had less than $500-worth of property taken from them, and the owner of a Dodge Ram who had less than $500 value taken from his truck, per a police booking affidavit. Other victims said Carter entered their garage attached to their home, and had belongings less than $500 value taken from their Nissan Xterra and Hyundai Sonata.
Carter also allegedly broke into and stole property worth less than $500 from the owners of a Honda Civic, Subaru Forester and Kia Soul; the Davis County owner of a Subaru Outback and GMC Sierra; and the Kaysville owner of a Lincoln Navigator, per the affidavit.
Layton police requested a Google radius warrant following the burglaries. Google analyzed Google subscriber locations and found only one identification common to multiple locations in Layton, later identified as belonging to Carter, the affidavit said.
Police submitted a Google account location warrant to track Carter's movement for five days, and his location history placed him at every burglary location within Layton, Kaysville and Davis County, according to the booking affidavit.
The physical description and photo on his driver's license also matched the description of the man seen on surveillance cameras at the residential burglary, police said. His pawn history was also searched, and police found Carter had pawned property consistent with what was stolen in the Davis County vehicle burglary, per the affidavit.
