WEST VALLEY CITY — Midway through the third quarter Friday, the 1975 song "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War played at Granger High's stadium.

Was it mere coincidence the Lancers had just gone down 49-7 to visiting Corner Canyon? Or was there some not-so-subtle messaging coming from Granger High's game ops?

Whatever the case, this much was clear on Friday: Corner Canyon is still Corner Canyon.

The Chargers started off the season with an offensive showcase in a 55-7 win over the upstart Lancers. And it wasn't long before everyone knew just how Friday night's endowment game was going to go.

On Corner Canyon's first offensive snap, senior quarterback Isaac Wilson rolled out of the pocket and found Brayden Eyre for a 77-yard touchdown.

"We see them in cover three; they drop one high safety, they got a little robber," Wilson said of that first play. "They cover it pretty well, but once I break out of the pocket, they don't move much, and my guy Brayden Eyre broke up the field at the perfect time. I saw him down the seam. We work on that scramble drill. It worked out perfectly."

There wasn't much that didn't work out perfectly for the Chargers offense.

Wilson, a Utah commit, threw four touchdown passes in the season-opening win, and unofficially went 17-of-25 for 470 yards with zero turnovers. Oh, and he added a 31-yard touchdown run — on fourth-and-10, no less.

Corner Canyon junior receiver Jerome Myles proved to be Wilson's favorite target, catching three touchdown passes — including ones for 78 and 65 yards — in the win.

"They got dogs over there (at Granger), but we just got to that point where we could go deep, we could go short, we could run the ball," Wilson said.

It was a strong opening statement for a program that is frankly used to putting up this type of result. But the lopsided scoreline shouldn't damper the newfound excitement around this season's Granger squad. A lot of the raised expectations revolve around senior quarterback Carson Su'esu'e, the 6-foot-5 California transfer and BYU commit, and he showed plenty of promise against a defense loaded with Division I talent.

Su'esu'e was unofficially 20-of-35 for 260 yards and a touchdown. He led long sustained drives — even if most didn't end up in points — and showed his touch when he dropped in a dime to Landon Figueroa for a 30-yard score.

Even Wilson came away impressed.

"He's a great player," Wilson said. "I mean, he's huge. I didn't think he was that kind of person. But he could throw it. … Playing a BYU commit, that was fun."

Will the two face off again in college down the road? There's definitely a chance. After the game, they shared a handshake, chatted and posed for a picture, too.

That wrapped up an opening night where Corner Canyon looked every bit like the nationally-ranked team they currently are. As for Granger, there's reason to believe they'll find the 5A competition a bit more friendly.
