CLEARFIELD — Police identified a woman who died after getting crushed by a tree while biking in Clearfield Wednesday evening.
Clearfield police responded to the Rio Grande Trail between 200 South and 300 North about 7:18 p.m. after a witness saw a tree fall on someone on the trail.
Rosario Bautista, 68, of Clearfield, was biking when the tree fell on her, crushing her and causing extensive injuries. Officers found her unconscious and pinned under the tree, Clearfield assistant police chief Devin Rogers said.
Police believe high winds in the area may have contributed to the accident as a thunderstorm moved through the area. Police said the incident is still under investigation, but evidence suggests it was a tragic accident.
Officers lifted the tree up to extricate the woman, Rogers said. She was transported to the hospital in "extremely" critical condition, where she died soon after.
The Rio Grande Trail between 200 South and 300 North was closed after the death Wednesday. Crews are cleaning up debris from fallen trees in the area, and the trail is expected to be closed through Friday, Clearfield police said in a statement.
