Sex offender receives jail time, probation for child voyeurism at church

SANDY — A registered sex offender has been sentenced to jail time and two years of probation after trying to record a boy in a bathroom stall at church.

Zachary Quinn Wallin, 33, of Sandy, pleaded guilty in April to being a sex offender in the presence of a child, a class A misdemeanor, reduced from a third-degree felony.

On May 30, Wallin was sentenced to 364 days in jail, but with 184 days suspended, so he will serve a total of 180 days in jail. Credit is being granted for 147 days previously served. He also received 24 months of probation.

On July 31, 2022, a boy in a bathroom stall at a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse at 2535 Newcastle Drive in Sandy noticed a cellphone being held over his stall, according to a police affidavit. The cellphone appeared to be recording the boy.

Wallin told police he had "a moment of weakness," charging documents said.

Third District Judge Kara Pettit has ordered that Wallin attend an adults-only ward for church. He may not own a phone with a camera, cannot access the internet without his parole officer's approval and may not contact the victim or his family.

Wallin was convicted in 2015 of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony, in 1st District Court. He was ordered to serve 210 days in the Cache County Jail followed by three years of probation, which he successfully completed in 2018, according to court records. Because of his conviction, Wallin has been required to register with the Utah Sex Offender and Kidnap Registry.
