SANTAQUIN — One person is dead and another was injured in a crash that happened on I-15 a mile south of Santaquin, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
Investigators believe the crash happened about 2:26 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a Tesla sedan "lost control in the slushy conditions," leaving the freeway and striking a cable barrier. The Tesla then rebounded across the lanes of traffic and went into the median, according to a release from UHP.
Shortly after the Tesla crash, a PT Cruiser "also lost control and spun into the median at the same location," the release said.
The PT Cruiser struck the Tesla. The driver of the PT Cruiser, a woman, was injured and was transported to the hospital, troopers said. The passenger of the PT Cruiser, a male, suffered fatal injuries, the department confirmed.
The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released pending family notification.
The crash and subsequent investigation forced the closure of southbound I-15 for about three hours on Sunday, UHP said.
Correction: A previous version said a passenger in the Tesla died. That has been corrected to a passenger in the PT Cruiser.
