With the pandemic, inflation and economic volatility, no one can blame students for waiting to see what the market will do in terms of employment opportunities. The problem is with fewer students considering career-focused degrees, fewer will benefit from that type of education. Overall economic prosperity is also impacted, especially in areas like Utah where there is a huge need for highly skilled workers.
The good news is that many opportunities await students in the form of high-paying jobs in fields such as construction management ($93K), web development ($69K) and electronics ($60K), healthcare ($40K), transportation ($50K), among others. Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is opening doors to these fields through its new Salt Lake Technical College (Salt Lake Tech) by providing a faster route to meaningful employment.
Salt Lake Tech is the sole provider of technical education in Salt Lake County and offers state-of-the-art instruction in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, computer networking, business, truck driving and more. The result is a win-win for our state and our students, as Utah gains a highly trained and specialized workforce, and our students get access to higher pay and career advancement.
Careers that work
Technical education programs, like those at Salt Lake Tech, offer a hands-on academic experience that equips students with the industry-relevant skills to start a career right away and opens doors to higher learning and better futures that many would otherwise not be able to access. Salt Lake Tech has 12 program areas with high-quality instruction provided by industry professionals. Each program equips them with real-world skills they can utilize to earn more, right out of the gate.
Students get that education and start their careers much faster than if they pursued a traditional degree. Many Salt Lake Tech programs can be completed in a matter of months and students have the flexibility to attend school when it fits their schedule, including evening and weekend classes. Many students keep full-time jobs and balance family needs while enrolled.
Salt Lake Tech launches career pathways though students can go on to earn associate and undergraduate degrees with transferable credits. This sets students up for career success immediately, and down the line – all while making sure their tuition dollars go the furthest.

A tradition of quality education at an affordable cost
In SLCC's early days, classes could often be taken for a few dollars each, as the goal was to make career training available to all. Now in its 75th year, the college still believes education should be available to everyone and works hard to ensure its tuition and fees remain affordable. This includes the many technical education programs offered through Salt Lake Tech. All Salt Lake Tech programs feature frequent start dates and affordable tuition.
Even with affordable tuition and fees, SLCC and Salt Lake Tech recognize that higher education remains an expensive proposition for many. Scholarships are available to a wide range of students in all types of programs. Some technical education programs are eligible for Financial Aid and that office stands ready to help students discover assistance programs that may be available to them. Students from all backgrounds have found opportunities at Salt Lake Tech and made an affordable investment in their future.
