Shelley Osterloh ReportingThe boom in the real estate market is causing a boom in another area -- real estate school. Learning about real estate, how to sell it, how to buy it and how to make some money by managing it is an appealing job for many people, and real estate schools are busy.
Enrollment is up at the Utah Real Estate School, with about 1500 students taking classes this year. Now that public schools are back in session a lot of mom's are enrolling in real estate school.
Christine Supoto,, South Jordan: "I quit working as an accountant and had a couple of babies and wanted to go back to work, and decided real estate would be a good field to go into."
Britney Green, Syracuse Mother of three: "We are just basically looking for a little extra income, travel money, play money for the kids and just kind of get me out of the house once in a while."
Instructors say about 80% of the students want to become real estate agents, but others want to better understand the market and the industry so they can invest in property. Auroa Neff is a Salt Lake hair stylist who says she wants a more flexible work schedule and better income.
Aurora Neff, Salt Lake Hair Stylist: "I have a few clients that have done some flipping and that definitely caught my eye. Wanting to make great money is definitely something everyone thinks about when they go into real estate."
The Utah Real Estate School in Salt Lake City moved into a larger building earlier this year to accommodate a growing number of students. It offers all the classes necessary to get a real estate license and has a sign department to help them get started with all the extra things they need.
Instructors say the market boom has certainly created more interest in real estate education, but the industry has a lot to offer.
Bob Larsen, Real Estate Instructor: "If some one is looking for variety, looking for independence, they are willing to work hard, they can succeed."
The cost for classes to get your real estate license is $450. There are also Utah Real Estate schools in Orem and Ogden and about a dozen other places around the state that offer video classes.
