MILLCREEK — A West Jordan man was charged Wednesday with stabbing a bouncer who was escorting him out of a bar because he was upset that he couldn't get more alcohol.

Jesse Alberto Sorensen, 36, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, a second-degree felony; carrying a weapon while under the influence, a class B misdemeanor; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.

Early Sunday, Sorensen was at the Barbary Coast Saloon, 4242 S. State, and requested a drink at the bar after 1 a.m. but was refused. Utah law does not allow bars or restaurants to serve alcohol after 1 a.m.

"Sorensen became belligerent by yelling and knocking over a barstool," according to charging documents.

Bouncers attempted to escort Sorensen and a woman out of the bar. On the way to the door, the woman punched one of the bouncers in the face. While that bouncer was dealing with the woman, the other bouncer escorted Sorensen outside. When the bouncer who was punched exited the bar a minute later, he saw Sorensen and his partner on the ground fighting, according to the charges.

Two bystanders attempted to help the bouncer. The group soon discovered that the bouncer had been stabbed and that he "had a laceration in his stomach area, and his intestines were protruding through the wound," the charges say.

The knife was knocked out of Sorensen's hands and kicked away from him as the group held Sorensen until police arrived.

The bouncer was transported to a local hospital where he underwent immediate surgery for his injuries, the charges state. Sorensen, who claimed to police he was acting in self-defense, was arrested. Prosecutors have requested he be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail pending trial.
