Hearty congratulations to the University of Utah football team for an undefeated season and well-earned invitation to play Alabama January 2 in the Sugar Bowl.

With their second appearance in four seasons in a big-time bowl, the Utes have become the nation's preeminent BCS busters. And yet, because of a blatantly unfair bowl selection system, they have virtually no chance of winning a coveted national championship.

It's simply not right that six so-called "elite conferences" control the fate of the national championship at the expense of all other major college football programs. It's especially rankling that the 64 schools in BSC conferences get most of the revenue produced during bowl season.

Kudos to schools such as Utah, Boise State, and Hawaii, for what they've done in recent years to upset the proverbial apple cart! And yet, under the current system, such schools, despite going undefeated, will always be frustrated tagalongs.

KSL will keep pulling for BCS busters like Utah. Indeed, the Utes would validate their national powerhouse stature by beating the Crimson Tide when they play next month in New Orleans. Still, the legitimacy of college football's national championship will only be restored once the BCS is scrapped and a valid playoff system takes its place.
